No other method replaces a lost tooth as naturally as an implant. ‘Implant’ means, loosely translated, ‘implantation’, referring to the invisible artificial tooth root that now takes over the function of the lost natural root. The only visible part is the ‘crown’, usually made of ceramic, a tooth-colored material that closely resembles natural enamel.
Implant-supported dentures fit securely without wobbling. They provide a secure feeling, natural facial expressions, and an attractive appearance. Implants are durable and protect the jawbone and tissue. Implants eliminate the need to grind down healthy neighboring teeth and the associated loss of tooth substance.
Teeth used to be vital: those who could no longer chew suffered from malnutrition and undernourishment. Toothlessness was also associated with a loss of prestige and power. It is therefore understandable that people have always tried to replace lost teeth. But for a long time, it remained a dream to feel as confident with artificial teeth as with one’s own.
It was only modern implants that brought this level of safety. The first attempts were made in the mid-20th century, followed soon after by clinical trials. In 1982, the umbrella organization for dental science in Germany, the German Society of Dentistry and Oral Medicine, recognized implants as a “proven procedure.” Today, an estimated 1 million implants are placed in Germany every year.
